Upcoming blockbuster movie season looks hopeful.

The blockbuster movie season is nearly upon us, and I must admit I'm pretty excited. With Spring here and Summer not far behind (the damned mosquitoes are already out in full force here!), there are several films that look quite promising. Below is a short list of films that are approaching release quickly.

The Soloist, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx, is a film that is based on the true story of musician Nathaniel Ayers (Foxx), who develops schizophrenia while attending Juliard and ends up homeless on the streets of L.A. Los Angeles Times reporter Steve Lopez (Downey Jr.) discovers that Ayers is a music virtuoso and begins writing a column about him. This film just looks POWERFUL.

The Soloist opens April 24th.

Star Trek hits theaters May 7th, and although new actors will portray the familiar characters from the original TV and film series', the film looks like a winner. Directed by J.J. Abrams (the man who brought you the TV series' Lost and Alias and the film Cloverfield) and starring a cast of virtual unknowns, the film will be a sort of prequel to the original films and TV series, following the back stories of James Tiberius Kirk and Spock before they were good old chums. Watch for Leonard Nimoy's appearance as Spock from the future. I've never been a big Trek fan. Star Wars was more my thing when it came to sci-fi. But I grew up in a family where Star Trek was nearly holy, and some of that rubbed off on me for sure. Watch the trailer for yourself. If your heart rate doesn't go up, you just might be dead.

I'm not sure how I feel about a Terminator film without Arnie in it, and I'm not even sure a Terminator film should be made without James Cameron (May I introduce T3 into evidence as exhibit A?), but when Terminator Salvation opens this May 21st, I may be singing another tune. Salvation follows the struggles of John Conner (Christian "Tantrum Throwing" Bale) after Skynet becomes "aware" and begins an all out campaign to eradicate humanity. Austrian actor and body builder Roland Kickinger (who also plays Schwarzenneger in the 2005 TV movie See Arnold Run) will appear as an early version of Schwarzenneger's T-800 Terminator from the original film.

The trailer certainly whets the appetite for destruction. Hopefully this re-boot won't have to be given the boot.

Also keep an eye out for Moon, a science fiction film about a man (Sam Rockwell) who finds himself unable to return home from his tour as the solitary employee at a mining base on the lunar surface. The film trailer echoes sci-fi classics such as Silent Running with Bruce Dern, and Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey with shades of the reality bending Twelve Monkeys. I think it is going to be a nice surprise. Moon opens some time in June.

Also out this summer are X Men Origins: Wolverine (dumb title), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (yay!), the eagerly awaited and overdue Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (and what's with all of the colons in movie titles lately?), and the screen adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger's debut novel The Time Traveler's Wife.

Sure, the economy is down, the country is in turmoil! All the more reason to go get lost in a movie. So join me in the balcony this summer and leave your troubles in the lobby. They'll be there when you come back out. Just make sure you bring the popcorn. I like extra butter.

Kirk Out!
