Is 2010 the Year of the Remake?

Has Hollywood run out of ideas, or are they simply doing the sure thing? Why are remakes so popular today? It's not as if there aren't hundreds of thousands of books sitting out there on shelves just waiting to be turned into movies. I suppose the sure thing/easy money explanation is probably the closest to the truth. Even though most of these movies turn out to be horrible blunders and are largely panned by most critics and serious movie fans. But I guess good taste never stopped the masses from buying in to crap of all forms. (See Britney Spears, Dancing With the Stars, and popped collars.)

Below is a short list of a few films that have graced (and I use that term very loosely in some of these cases) the silver screen recently:

Star Trek

Okay, I admit it. I loved this one. But it wasn't so much of a remake as it was a reboot.

Planet of the Apes

Meh.

Lost in Space

Sucked.

Dukes of Hazzard

Did not and will not see this tripe.

Friday the 13th

Nope.

Halloween

I will not watch a Rob Zombie film. I will not do it. He is a pretentious, egotistical, name dropping idiot. There. Glad I got that off of my chest.

War of the Worlds

Not bad. But not particularly memorable, either.

The Day the Earth Stood Still

Haven't seen it.

Fame

No reason to see this garbage.

And here is a list of Hollywood's latest refried ideas.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

I could care less about this one.

Clash of the Titans (2010)

Loved this as a kid. Don't see any reason to do it again.

Red Dawn 2010)

Dear God, why?! John Milius' commie hating, Red Scare inducing Cold War flick is a classic not to be tampered with.

The Karate Kid ( 2010)

No, seriously, Lord. Why in the name of all that is holy must you take something so pure and innocent and ruin it with the likes of Jackie Chan and Will Smith? I spit on this idea.

Battlestar Galactica (2010/2011)

Could be cool, I think. It was a TV show after all. Not so much a remake, or am I splitting hairs?

Logan's Run (2010/2011)

Oh, dear Jesus. Dear Jesus, no. Nooooooooooo!

Also, check out this website for a pretty extensive list of upcoming remakes. It's fascinating to see what's even being thought about.

Want to get in on the action? Click the comment button below and tell me what you think about it all. Is Hollywood angling for the sure thing? Have the studios grown lazy and complacent? Or are they just too stupid to walk into a book store and get some fresh ideas? Should they stop wasting money on these lackluster redos and start putting some advertising dollars behind good films like this year's sci-fi sleeper Moon? Or are you excited about the old being made new again? Perhaps you have your own ideas for remakes that you would like to see come to fruition?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts, ideas, and comments.

Kirk Out.
