With the hope of another live action Star Wars film pretty much put on hold, many fans have turned their hopes and dreams to the possibility of more SW television series'. Rumors and bits of tantalizing quotes from George Lucas have been floating around since the first series of Clone Wars shorts aired on Cartoon Network. Eventually, though, it was announced that a live action television series set in the Star Wars universe would begin production with a possible air date of 2009.
2009 came and went and still no live action series. Now, the word is that the show may see the light of day somewhere between 2010 and 2012. Phrases like "noir", "action heavy", and "darker and grittier" have been bandied about by Lucas and his sock puppet producer Rick McCallum (I don't care for old Ricky boy, if you know what I mean). A noir-like SW series doesn't bother me, but I hope that Lucas has realized that darker doesn't necessarily mean better. Please reference the Prequel trilogy and all of the times that he touted it as "darker and grittier". My ass.
Several unsubtle clues have also been dropped by Lucas and McCallum suggesting that the series will almost certainly prominently feature the bounty hunter Boba Fett. I say poo to this. Boba Fett was cool to look at, but this ridiculous cult following that sprang up over a completely throw away character from Return of the Jedi does not warrant a series centered around said throw away character. (And yes, I know he was in The Empire Strikes Back, too.)
Nonetheless, I hadn't thought about this series much until my son mentioned something about it to me today. And he got me thinking about the TV series and, frankly, the whole Star Wars franchise. (Thanks for the blog fodder, son.)
So, I decided that over the next few weeks I'll discuss different facets of Star Wars, hotly debated SW topics, and what possible upcoming projects I might like to see.
I look forward to your input.
